Owls by Day led by Mike and Merry Lynn Denny

This field trip started out under an overcast sky at Hood Park with an outstanding group of folks. We visited Hood Park, Charbonneau Park, Fish Hook Park, Smith Springs Rd., Lyons Ferry Park, Kahlotus and ending at Windust Park. Highlights of the trip were........

  • Long-eared Owls......19 birds-located 7 birds at Wind Dust after most folks had left.

  • Great Horned Owl...8 birds

  • Rough-legged Hawk...3 birds in Franklin Co.

  • Coopers Hawk.....1 bird, in WW Co.

  • Sharp-shinned Hawk.....1 bird at Fish Hook Park not far from a plucked Saw-whet Owl.

  • AMERICAN TREE SPARROW....20 birds along Lyons Ferry Rd.-this is the most we have ever seen in Walla Walla Co. until today. These birds were chirping and singing in one flock.

  • Bohemian Waxwing......24 birds at the Lyons Ferry Fish Hatchery, Franklin Co.

  • Northern Shrike...1 bird along HWY 261 in Franklin Co.

  • 900 to 1100 Common Goldeneye with 80% male. These birds were diving for spilt grain at the barge slip west of Windust Park, Franklin Co.

  • 24 Bohemian Waxwings at the Lyons Ferry Fish Hatchery.

Mammals of note: Porcupine, mule deer, howling Coyotes

A huge thank-you to all those that joined us for this great day in the field. Thank-you for supporting WOS.
