Searching Hints
• Text contained within tables or charts is not included in the search database, but can be searched within individual issues.
• Capitalization does not matter.
• Hyphens and apostrophes do matter.
Thus, a search for Black-bellied Plover (with hyphen) will return all instances of Black-bellied Plover, black-bellied plover, Black-Bellied Plover, and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, but will not return any instances of Black bellied Plover (without the hyphen).
A search for Western scrub jay or scrub jay (no hyphen) will not return any instances of Western scrub-jay or scrub-jay.
A search for Wilsons warbler (with no apostrophe) will not return any instances of Wilson's warbler.
• To be sure you get the most instances of a species, use only a simple search term such as plover or sandpiper.
• Also try searching on nicknames to pick up occurrences such as "....We saw sooties and short taileds ...."
• Over 20 years of newsletters, style is not always consistent. Sometimes it's "shrub-steppe"; other times it's "shrubsteppe" or "shrub steppe. A search for "steppe" will return all instances. There are also the rare misspellings, for example, "Bickelton" rather than the correct "Bickleton."
