CHECK-LIST OF WASHINGTON BIRDS

Excerpted from Washington Birds 6 (December 1997)
with changes current through October 2005

Compiled through November 2004 by the Washington Bird Records Committee: Kevin Aanerud (chair), Phil Mattocks (secretary), Steven Mlodinow, Dennis Paulson, Andy Stepniewski, Bob Sundstrom, and Bill Tweit.

The Washington Bird Records Committee considers the natural occurrence of the following birds, within the last 50 years, to be adequately documented by specimens, photographs, sound recordings, and written reports.  Introduced species are indicated by (I).  Species in italics constitute the Review List (20 or fewer Washington records, 1990-1999). Written reports of any observations of these species, or of species not on the list, should be submitted together with supporting evidence to: WBRC, PO Box 31783, Seattle, WA 98103 or use the Rare Bird Reporting Form.

Names and taxonomic arrangement follow the American Ornithologists' Union Check-list (7th ed., 1998) and supplements (2000-2005)

The Seasonal Occurrence Bar Graphs from Wahl & Paulson,
showing when and where the regularly occurring birds can be found,
is available On-Line.

Dennis Paulson and Gary Shugart have collaborated on a new annotated checklist of Washington birds, available at the
Slater Museum website at http://www.ups.edu/x5665.xml.
It has a very brief statement of the status of all regularly occurring species and a list of the rarities.

The state list now stands at 480 species. In addition to the 466 species listed above, 9 species are represented in Washington by single-person sight records which the Committee believes are valid:

Great Knot
Jack Snipe
Ivory Gull
Ruby-throated Hummingbird
White-eyed Vireo
Blue-headed Vireo
Phainopepla
Prairie Warbler
Kentucky Warbler

Five more species, though recorded historically in Washington, have not been documented in the state for over 50 years (date of most recent record in parentheses)

Red-billed Tropicbird (1941)
Blue-footed Booby (1935)
California Condor (1897)
Fulvous Whistling-Duck (1905)
Allen's Hummingbird (1894)
Western Gull/Glaucous-winged Gull, American Crow/Northwestern Crow, and Townsend's Warbler/Hermit Warbler intergrade freely where their breeding ranges overlap in Washington. Cordilleran Flycatcher may occur in extreme southeastern Washington, but evidence of hybridization with Pacific-slope Flycatcher and the lack of genetic studies for Washington populations have so far prevented the Committee from accepting this species for the state list.  Shrinking introduced populations of American Black Duck and Sky Lark breed at Everett and on San Juan Island, respectively. Birds found away from these areas may represent wild vagrants and should be reported to the Committee with full documentation.
