The Art of
Vagrants: Washington Bird
Records Committee

Members of the Washington Bird
Records Committee enthralled participants of the 2009 Kelso
Conference so much that they have been invited back for an
encore. While the Kelso talk discussed documentation of
vagrants, this presentation will focus on how to find them. Have
you wondered how people target rare warblers during migration?
How it's possible to scan a mudflat full of peeps to find that
rare Stint? Members of the WBRC will share the tricks to this
"magic." Information including migration patterns, how weather
relates to vagrants, and identification tips for picking
vagrants out of flocks of similar species, will be revealed.
This is sure to be an informative and entertaining evening
presentation.

Black Rocks to
White Snow Fields:
Birds and
Habitats of North Central Washington
Ken Bevis

Ken Bevis, habitat biologist for
the Washington Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, will give a
presentation on the species and habitat features of areas in
north central Washington, accompanied by photographs by Teri
Pieper. Habitats in this region vary widely, from breathtakingly
high mountains to subtle shrub/steppe. Understanding these
habitats will help members learn and appreciate the varied bird
distribution of north central Washington.
Ken currently lives near Twisp in
the Methow Valley, and works in salmon restoration on behalf of
the Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. He has worked in
natural resources for over 28 years, including in forestry,
trails, wildlife, and now fish. Ken is a lifelong naturalist and
outdoors person who loves hiking, birding, hunting, and fishing.
Those who attended the 1999 WOS conference in Yakima may
remember Ken's entertaining presentation on Washington birds.
